1.1. Introduction

The subject Child and Youth Pathology forms part of the Mention of Attention to Diversity in the Degree in Teaching in Infant Education. It has six credits in total and aims to provide the students with the basic competencies to know the most frequent psychopathological disorders in the educational context, to be able to explain their origin and evolution.
For the achievement of these competencies the student starts from active methodologies that aim to promote an applied, reflexive, autonomous and group quality learning. It covers a range of problems and learning situations that, due to their nature, have not been covered in the rest of the curriculum of the degree in Teaching in Infant Education.
It is taught in the first term of the fourth year of the degree programme and it is an optional subject.

2.1. Learning goals

The student, to be able to pass the subject, will have to demonstrate the following results:
1. Using and understanding basic concepts in Child Psycopathology (classifications, diagnostics, evaluation and intervention) related to class work.
2. Knowing the most frequent diagnostic categories in psychopathology in Infant Education and knowing how to generate explanations about the conditions that take place in profiles of psychopathological vulnerability.
3. Identifying aims and resources and planning evaluation processes and intervention regarding specific psychopathological problems from the point of view of the teacher in Infant Education.
4. Collaborating in the development of interventions of evaluation or treatment in classroom settings or outside of them, incorporating the family and/or other professionals from a clinical and educational context in this task.

5.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on active participation, case studies, teamwork etc. that favors the development of communicative skills and critical thinking. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practical activities, practice sessions, autonomous work, tutorials, and academic guidance.


Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

5.2. Learning tasks

The course includes 6 ECTS organized according to:
- Lectures (3 ECTS): 30 hours.
- Practice sessions (2 ECTS): 20 hours.
- Autonomous work ( ECTS): 87 hours.
- Tutorials (1 ECTS): 10 hours.
- Assessment (0,3 ECTS): 3 hours.

 

Lectures: the professor presents theoretical contents.
Practice sessions: they can involve discussion and presentation of case studies, practical work outside the classroom (field work or visits), and seminars.
Autonomous work: students do tasks such as autonomous study, reading of the course book, preparation of practice sessions and seminars, and summative assignments.
Tutorials: professors' office hours can be used to solved doubts and to follow-up students’ work.
Assessment: final examination

5.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

1. Introduction to Psychopathology: concept, theoretical models and principles of evaluation and intervention.
2. Disorders and depression and anxiety in childhood.
3. Behaviour problems in childhood.
4. Attention deficit and hyperactivity.
5. Incontinence disorders
6. Food Disorders in the 0-6 age range (picky eating, chewing for too long, refusal to eat, eating too slowly, vomiting).
7. Sleep disorders.
8. Tics and other motor disorders.
9. Abuse and child mistreatment and other environmental disorders that pose psychopathological risks.
10. Programmes for prevention of psychopathological risks. Interventions in family contexts.
11. Other disorders during the Infant Education stage.
